"That's Not My Job."

Work has been B U S Y and super crazy this week. We've been joking that it's ironic we all work to sell better sleep, but we don't get any. I feel like this is something everyone says all the time, but believe me, we are doing the most at work right now. For me, it is actually one of the best and most fun times in my career, despite some late nights, change and challenges. I feel like a little sponge wanting to soak up everything I'm learning and love being given more responsibility and ownership of projects. So much is changing so fast and it's like a marketers dream to be a part of of all the cool stuff happening at work. I'm really grateful everyday to be a part of my company and make every effort to do my job to the best i can. Despite feeling joy and willingness to work hard and be involved in everything, there is only so much you can add to your plate. I've felt spread super thin at times and it's left me feeling incomplete like I wasn't able to give 100% towards something I was asked to do or even said I was going to do. Here's some tips for some things I've learned in the past months on ways to deal with an increase in your workload:
Quality > Quantity
This means you just might have to say "no" to some projects. I am such a "Yes!" girl that saying "no" to anything I'm asked to do it superrrrrr hard for me. However, it's an even worse feeling to say "yes" to a request and be so swamped that I can only give a portion of my time and creative juices to that project. Sometimes it's best to just be honest about how much you're able to commit to something before spitting out a "sure, I can do that!" This can help you produce more quality work vs. a lot of work that's not as great.
Sometimes, you just need to ask for help.
If you're like me, you're thinking "Ugh. I hate asking for help." To me, it's always felt like that means I can't do things on my own and being a YOPRO, (Young Professional) I sometimes feel like I have to be independent and prove I can make things happen without any help. But really, it is such a great feeling to be humble and raise your hand to say "I could use a hand on this" and lean on someone with different strengths and expertise that can help you achieve your goal. Working on a team and learning from others is fun. Drowning in work alone is not.
Do what you say you're going to do.
There have been many times I've been left with no help on something that people committed to doing. It's why I'm really careful about my words and what I say I'm going to do. Words have a lot of power to me in my professional and personal life and if you say you'll be there, be there. If you say you'll handle something, handle it. If you say you will do something, you should do it. Overall, if you say you will do something, you should do it.
Make Time & Be Kind
Your work world may be crazy, but guess what? It probably means that your co-workers are in the same exact boat. Don't get so caught up in the whirlwind that you forget to stop and make time to help others, listen to others, and be kind to everyone. I recently felt a little overwhelmed with some projects and change and sometimes an encouraging text or helping hand make all the difference. It's nice to know you're appreciated and so you should make an effort to also do the same for others.
"That's Not My Job."
You should NEVER be above ANY job at your company. If it's important to the company or a coworker, it should be important to you. If something needs to be done and nobody is stepping up, then maybe you could. Never wait to give a helping hand or wait to start making a difference. This is one of my favorite stories I wanted to share:
This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have.
Be the somebody who helps everybody! Hope you had a FANTASTIC work week and happy Friday!
